Raven Frees the Light ~ by Deb Kirkeeide

I love mythology. Especially the stories where the Raven plays a role. I've done a version of this idea before but I especially like this painted version.

In this myth from the Haida tribe of the Northwest coast the Raven, Creator of the World tires of the darkness that covers the earth and decides to do something about it. Having heard stories of an old man who has a collection of boxes that contain the relief to the suffering of the darkness. He transforms himself to be born to the old man's beautiful daughter. As the young Raven Boy sticks to his paln, he tricks his grandfather, who loves his grandson very much, into giving him the box that contains the light. Upon opening the box the Raven transforms himself into his old self, grabs the light and flies up into the open sky. Raven the transformer lights up the world and as he flies carrying the light in his beak he is able to see the beauty of the world he created. While admiring his work, he is startled by an eagle and drops the light which breaks into three pieces when it hits the earth. Two pieces bounce up into the air and become the Moon and the Stars. The Raven retrieves the third piece and places the sun in its proper place where it warms us, gives us light and sustains life to this day.

The new year always offers new beginnings, hope and light. I hope the New year brings light to your life and is bright and shiny! Happy New Year!
